Honoring Finneytown’s Legacy: A Reflection on the 2024 Legacy Ceremony

The 2024 Legacy Ceremony was a powerful testament to the enduring spirit of Finneytown’s past, present, and future. This year, we gathered to celebrate two monumental additions to the Finneytown Hall of Fame: Jan Bennett, the beloved women’s soccer coach, and the legendary 1974 men’s state soccer champions. The event was filled with heartfelt tributes, laughter, and the unmistakable sense of community that continues to define Finneytown.

Jan Bennett: A Legacy of Grace and Leadership

Jan Bennett was more than just a soccer coach at Finneytown. She was a mentor, leader, and a role model whose influence reached far beyond the soccer field. As her family accepted the honor on her behalf, stories shared by her loved ones and former players reminded us of the invaluable lessons she imparted: winning and losing with grace, the importance of people over outcomes, and the belief that true leadership is about serving others. Jan’s commitment to her players and the Greater Cincinnati community left a profound legacy, making her induction a deeply moving tribute.

Her daughters, Casey and Randi, and her husband, Bill, along with Jan’s former players and lifelong friends, shared how Jan’s values shaped not only the teams she coached but also the lives of everyone she encountered. From her iconic white Mustang to the countless championships she helped her teams win, Jan’s memory remains vivid, her legacy ever-present in the hearts of those she inspired.

Celebrating the 1974 Men’s Soccer Champions

The ceremony also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the 1974 men’s state soccer champions—the first-ever state soccer champions in Ohio. With an undefeated season, this team not only brought home Finneytown’s first state title but also laid the foundation for future generations of athletes. Coach Bob Muro, unable to attend in person, sent a video message highlighting the team’s determination, hard work, and unmatched camaraderie. He spoke of the team’s grit and unity, traits that carried them to victory in a time when state championships in soccer were still new territory.

The bond between the players was evident as they took the stage together once more, reminiscing about their unforgettable journey. From heated local rivalries to national tournaments in Canada, the team overcame adversity and grew stronger, ultimately making history. Players like Doug Weinstein, Tom Stevens, JP Hutchins, and many others were lauded for their incredible contributions on the field, but it was the collective spirit of teamwork that truly defined their success.
